Android 14: Release date, features and updates

Google is reportedly working on Android 14 and has chosen a name for it. Google is now updating Pixel devices that qualify for it with Android 13. Other manufacturers have also announced beta programs, including Xiaomi, Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus.

Google’s Android versions typically go by names that seem sweet or dessert-like. Pie, for instance, was the name of Android 9. With Android 10, Google, however, adopted number naming.

Then Android 10, 11, 12, and 13 appeared. For those who do not know, Androids 10 and 11 are referred to as Quince, Red Velvet Cake and Snow Cone, respectively, and Androids 12 and 13 are referred to as Tiramisu.

What is Android 14?

The Android operating system’s fourteenth major version will be called Android 14. It will debut as Android 13’s replacement.

Upside Down Cake will be the name of Android 14. The Android 14 codename, Upside Down Cake, has reportedly been discovered in the Android Gerrit, according to XDA Developers.

A cake that has been baked upside down in the oven with the toppings on the bottom of the pan is known as a “upside down cake.” The cake is then turned over and served upright. It’s great to see Google continuing to use dessert-related code names for Android releases.

It is possible that Google did not have many fascinating possibilities to select from, therefore the name Android 14 may not sound as thrilling as earlier code names. As we have already seen similar leaks in the past that disclosed the dessert or sweet code names of Android versions, this is neither new nor surprising.

Google provides ongoing software maintenance for their products. Google Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel 5a 5G, Pixel 4, Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 4XL, Pixel 5, and Pixel 5XL may be on the list of Android 14 suitable phones.

Android 14 Expected Features

Predicting Android 14 variants at this time is difficult, especially because Android 13 was just released. However, there are currently no firm details regarding Android 14. But given the amazing features of Android 13, we anticipate that the Android “Upsidedown Cake” will make Android phones even more appealing. The tech giant may release the following significant features with Android 14:

Dedicated WiFi and mobile network toggle options

Google replaced the individual WiFi and mobile network options with a single “Internet” toggle starting with Android 12. Most likely, the tech giant did not want to overwhelm Android users with too many alternatives.

However, IBM appears to have made a mistake because consumers had trouble navigating those options. Additionally, consumers were continually adjusting their cellphone settings as a result of the often inconsistent internet connectivity.

Apps With Catchy Gesture Navigation

Any digital device’s success depends on its aesthetic appeal, and mobile operating systems are no exception. Due to the OS’s appeal, which Apple continuously enhancing with each new release, Apple users tend to stick with their devices.

Google must now address this issue, and a good starting point would be to implement user-friendly gesture navigation. It should make the apps less competitive and give users a more engaging experience.

Support for Satellite Connectivity

Support for satellite communication is one of Android 14’s most anticipated features. And it’s not just a user’s fantasy; Google representatives have almost verified it. If that happens, which is very inevitable, then getting satellite connectivity on their newest Android handsets will undoubtedly be a nice treat for Android customers.

Enhanced Support For Autonomous Launchers

Despite Google’s best efforts, not every Android device comes with an aesthetically pleasing built-in launcher, which continues to degrade the user experience.

However, a few years ago, users could easily install the third-party launchers of their choosing, so it wasn’t an issue. With Android 10, the tech giant included gesture navigation, which made matters worse. Because of this, many third-party launchers were unable to gain the same level of access to the device as the built-in launchers, failing to give users the experience they were hoping for.

Improved privacy protections

However, Google is undoubtedly a marketer and enjoys running advertising, unlike Apple. However, since iOS 14.5, Apple has given its consumers better privacy protections, therefore it’s high time for Google to take action to protect its reputation.

Lock Screen Widgets

Up until Android 4.4 (KitKat), one of the most well-known Android releases ever, Google gave users the option to add any widgets they wanted to the lock screen. But Google removed this feature in later iterations.

The precise reasoning behind Google’s choice is unclear. Furthermore, it might just be perceived as a decorative element. However, some ardent Android supporters might be waiting to use their old phones once more.

Additionally, it might be practical for some users, which is possibly why Samsung continues to provide this option to its clients despite Apple’s decision to remove it with iOS 16. In order to get an advantage over Apple devices, Google may decide to return this feature in Android 14.

Release Date for Android 14

In the past, Google has consistently released its Android beta versions in the first few months of the year, with stable releases following in the autumn.

For instance, the first developer preview for Android 12 was online in February 2021, but the final, stable version wasn’t made available until October 2021. Similar to Android 12, the stable version of Android 13 was released on August 15, 2022, but the developer preview was available in February 2022.

Therefore, based on these schedules, the public release of Android 14 will occur in August 2023. Although it has not been proven yet, Google has also made similar suggestions.

Google made the following statement in a change to their Android beta page: “Android 13 QPR beta updates continue through March 2023, followed by Android 14 beta releases.”
