Huawei P40 Pro – Full Review, Features, and Price

There’s no doubt that Huawei is a well-established brand when it comes to making the best smartphones that tick all round and that in the Huawei P40 Pro. There’s no doubt this phone offers the best when it comes to design, cameras, long-lasting battery, and performance.

However, for a normal Android user, you might found this phone a bit frustrating owing to the ban of certain Chinese products in the US. Unfortunately, you won’t have access to basic Android apps like Gmail, Google Play Store, YouTube, Google Photos, and many others. There’s no doubt these are the only hindrance stopping you from buying this smartphone as you won’t be able to access basic services that are on other Android devices.

However, the Huawei P40 Pro does offer premium aesthetics that can be considered the best by the company. Also, the cameras are great, delivering a flagship performance in low-light scenarios and offering great-looking photos all the same time. Fortunately, the battery life is great too and can comfortably last for 48 hours if you’re a light user.

In the next sub-heading, we’ll explore more on the total specs of the Huawei P40 Pro and its limitations. However, with time, you’ll get used to Huawei-provided services as alternatives to Google.

There’s no doubt this is the best-looking smartphone from Huawei and one of the best in the market. While holding the phone, it’ll give you a premium feeling and it’s built with some flagship device materials to make it last longer.

The smartphone features the trending curvy display design which Huawei describes as ‘Quad-curve Overflow Display’. This is a design style that was kick-started by Samsung on the Galaxy S7 Edge, but the Huawei P40 Pro breaks the rule getting curved top and bottom edges. However, this doesn’t mean that the display itself curved at the top or bottom of the phone, but just the curved glass.

Meanwhile, you’ll still experience some thin bezels at the top and bottom, although they’re thinner compared to most phones. With 158.2 x 72.6 x 9mm dimensions, the P40 Pro is slightly shorter and narrower than the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus and it fits perfectly in your hand. However, those with small palms will need two hands to hold the phone comfortably or option for the original P40 which is slightly smaller.

Fortunately, Huawei has chosen classy-looking tones for the P40 Pro. Depending on your location, there are up to five colors to choose from including Silver Frost, Blush Gold, Deep Sea Blue, Ice White, and Black. These color selections are arguably nicer than the ones on most flagship devices including the Galaxy S20 Series.

The power key and volume rocker are positioned on the right side of the phone, while on the base is the dual nano-SIM tray which shares the same slot with the SDcard. The USB-C and sound speaker are also located here.

The 6.58-inch OLED display on the Huawei P40 Pro has a resolution of 2640 x 1200 pixels which equates to a 441 PPI pixel density. Fortunately, there’s a 90Hz refresh rate which is faster than the 60Hz on its predecessor but not compared to the 120Hz that’s on the OnePlus 8 Pro.

There’s no doubt that a higher refresh rate paves way for a smoother image on the screen especially when streaming videos, playing games, or strolling through your social media news feed. Fortunately, the 90Hz refresh rate is the default settings but you can choose to reduce it to 60Hz if you want to conserve power.

Huawei P40 Pro: Camera Review

Huawei P40 Pro: Camera Review

Undoubtedly, the most selling point of this smartphone is its camera tech. The P20 and P30 introduced an amazing system of photography, and Huawei is looking forward to continuing that step with the P40 Pro.

The Leica-branded camera arrangement comprises a 50-MP main camera and 40-MP ultra-wide sensor. Also, there’s another 12-MP telephoto lens with 5× optical zoom and 50× digital zoom. Meanwhile, there’s a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor for portrait shots that helps in blurring the image backgrounds.

Fortunately, Huawei equipped its RYYB sensor in the primary camera and it’s bigger than the one on Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. The RYYB (Red, Yellow, Yellow, Blue) is a better alternative to the normal RGGB (Red, Green, Green, Blue) filter on most phones. For the first time, Huawei is debuting its XD Fusion Engine in the P40 Pro which uses AI technology to optimize images.

Flipping over to the front panel is a horizontally-shaped cutout that houses the 32-MP selfie camera, alongside an IR TOF 3D for portrait shots which functions as face unlock. The face-unlock works well, although there’s an in-display fingerprint scanner if you don’t fancy using your face to access your phone.

Huawei P40 Pro: Specs, Performance, and Software

The Huawei P40 Pro ships in the same Kirin 990 5G chipset that we’ve seen on the Mate XS and the older Huawei P30 Pro 5G. There’s no doubt this is a pretty fast processor that can rival most flagship devices out there.

This is paired with only 8GB RAM without any 12GB option available. However, you’ll have triple storage options of 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB which can also be expanded via the SDcard slot, unlike most flagship smartphones.

Undoubtedly, the Huawei P40 Pro has a speedy performance that can be compared to the likes of the iPhone 11 and Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus. Switching between apps or multitasking will be very easy with this device.

The Huawei P40 Pro runs on Android 10, but without Googles services like Play Store, YouTube, Gmail, and many others. However, Huawei developed its own App Gallery as an alternative to Google Play Store but there’s an absence of top-end apps like WhatsApp or Facebook but they can be transferred to your phone through a third-party or Phone Clone.

Huawei P40 Pro: Specs, Performance, and Software

The Huawei P40 Pro has a 4,200mAh battery cell which performs exceptionally well. Fortunately, you’ll easily use the battery for two days on a single charge if you’re a light user. Also, there’s wireless charging support and the P40 Pro supports up to 40W fast-charging.
