Nvidia Overview

Nvidia, founded on April 5, 1993, with its headquarters in Santa Clara, California is a well reputable company widely known for developing the best-selling graphics cards in the market, as well as dominating other tech areas including Mobile computing, AI, and Automotive cars.

However, AMD – Nvidia’s closest competitor has developed tons of cards, but Nvidia consistently continues to set the bar for high standard GPUs, and the GeForce RTX 2070 and GTX 1660 Ti graphics cards are a great example of their expertise. Below, we’ll be comparing their differences to know the best between the two.

GeForce RTX 2070 vs GTX 1660 Ti: Architecture

Architecture is where the main difference between the two cards lies. It also impacts speed and overall performance. Below are the base and boost clock capabilities of the two GPUs.

RTX 2070

  • Base clock: 1410MHz
  • Boost clock: 1620MHz

GTX 1660 Ti

  • Base clock: 1500MHz
  • Boost clock: 1830MHz

The RTX 2070 is undoubtedly a good gaming card, though the GTX 1660 Ti pulls ahead in both the base and boost clock specifications.

On the other hand, the GTX 1660 Ti is made with Nvidia’s own Turing architecture which paves way for smooth gaming performance and 1.4X power efficiency upgrades, unlike other older generation cards. From the specifications, there’s no doubt the GTX 1660 Ti is the King of the mid-range power category. Also, this card can handle up to 1080p and 1440p gaming, although it’ll struggle at 4k.

However, despite the GTX 1660 Ti has a slightly bigger base and clock speed, the RTX 2070 is considerably more powerful. Also, the RTX 2070 is powered by Nvidia’s own Turing architecture and will deliver up to 6X faster performance than older generations, including upgraded graphics that won’t lag. Fortunately, the RTX 2070 was built on the 12nm process and support AI and real-time ray tracing. It does this by linking multiple kinds of Tensor and CUDA cores.

GeForce RTX 2070 vs GTX 1660 Ti: Cooling

The cooling capability of a gaming card is considerably one of the most important aspects. This is the factor that determines how well your GPU can handle games at massive speed while you enjoy an immersive and smooth gaming experience.

The RTX 2070 is equipped with 6GB of 14GHz memory, 1,920 CUDA cores, and 240 Tensor cores. Also, it boasts of 88 degrees Celsius maximum GPU temperature, whereas the GTX 1660 Ti features a temperature of 83 degrees Celsius. When it comes to cooling, the RTX 2070 pulls ahead in this category, but purchasing a separate cooling system will be better, but keep in mind it comes at an additional cost.

Furthermore, the GTX 1660 Ti comes with thermals that help to keep the temperature cool during intensive gaming, whilst the RTX 2070 is equipped with wind blade fans and an innovative slot design that can withstand up to 4k resolution without overheating.

GeForce RTX 2070 vs GTX 1660 Ti: Resolution

This is how sharp, clear, and colorful images on gameplay will appear. The GTX 1660 Ti can comfortably achieve 50 – 60fps which is the same as RTX 2070. However, this resolution will be lacking in immersive lighting, shadows, and ambiance.

Contrary, the RTX 2070 can achieve the same 50 – 60fps, but at maximum settings. This means the RTX 1660 is faster by 58% and can deliver a more immersive and smooth experience. However, the RTX 2070 will easily provide you with a greater frame rate than the GTX 1660. The RTX 2070 can comfortably play Borderlands and Call of Duty in FHD resolution, but you must not overburden the card for a smooth experience.

GeForce RTX 2070 vs GTX 1660 Ti: VRAM

The RTX 2070 features a generous 8GB VRAM and a memory speed of 8Gbps, which is a massive improvement from the older generation cards, such as the GTX 960.

Nevertheless, the GTX 1660 Ti comes with a 6GB GDDR5 VRAM. However, this seems not to be enough, although it’ll handle 1440p perfectly, it’ll likely struggle significantly on 4k games.

However, the GTX 1660 Ti can withstand high-frequency gaming, but many games of today require at least a memory capacity of 8GB upwards, making this GPU unworthy to compete with most of the latest graphics cards in the market.

On the other hand, the RTX 2070, though deemed as an entry-level GPU features an 8GB VRAM. This puts it above the GTX 1660 Ti as it can comfortable withstand the highest texture gameplay between 1440 and 1880p, including 4k.

Apart from these general specifications, it’s also worthy to know that neither of these cards comes with Nvidia’s VirtualLink™ feature. Meanwhile, VirtualLink™ is an industry-standard specification that allows VR headsets to connect to devices by using a single connector, rather than multiple cords. This speeds up VR set-up and paves way for smaller devices to have a more realistic and immersive game experience.

However, the absence of VirtualLink™ doesn’t mean the cards aren’t capable of meeting your gaming needs. However, the RTX 2070 can comfortably handle varieties of VR headsets due to its high processing cores.

From the above specifications, it’s very obvious that the RTX 2070 will offer you a more immersive 1440 gaming experience. However, this comes with a slightly higher price than the GTX 1660 Ti but offers more features including excellent cooling capabilities, ray tracing, and DLSS. On the contrary, the GTX 1660 Ti offers some impressive premium features despite being a mid-range card. There’s a Turing architecture, but with absence of cooling capabilities and ray tracing.
