Google Pixel 5: Features, Specs, and Price in 2021

The Google Pixel 5 is a true definition of quality and focused on what pixels do; offering users the best camera experience in a very clean stock Android interface. As we’re taught to know, a new version of something is way better than its predecessor, and that’s the case of the Pixel 5.

Of course, the new Google Pixel 5 is what’s called “Simplified”, featuring an all-in-one unique body design that curves around the edges which are metal. Also, Google has returned to the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner which is faster than the in-display sensor. One of the highlights of the Pixel 5 is coming with the latest Android 11 on board. The new Pixel 5 also comes with a larger battery capacity, 128GB base storage unit, a new ultra-wide lens, and 5G network connectivity.

However, being Simplified also means lacking in a few ways. Google has cut some corners in designing the Pixel 5 to keep the price low and make it level with other flagship devices like OnePlus 8 and Samsung Galaxy S20 FE. Also, Google has chosen a lower-tier chipset and altered some of the Pixel 4 advanced features like the 3D Face Unlock System.

However, the Google Pixel 5 still remains a pleasant phone to use by offering a wireless charging and 90Hz refresh rate. The Google Pixel 5 is specifically designed for fans who are willing to sacrifice some flagship features to get an outstanding photo experience. Contrary, the Google Pixel 5 does offer some features that are lacking on most flagship devices, and it feels like one of the handiest phones in the market. With the arrival of the iPhone 12 range, the Pixel 5 is set to face some serious competition with the “Mini” flagship model.

If you’ve seen a Google-branded phone before, then you have seen Pixel 5. However, the only difference is that this is the first Google phone to have a metal rear panel. The American phone giant switched to a metal body to pave way for more resilient to damage, whether as a result of a serious drop or wear and tear. Also, the metallic body gave the phone a more polycarbonate finish than the typical aluminum frames. Its texture not only feels appealing but also allows for a better handgrip of the phone.

Fortunately, this phone feels small that you can mistaken it for iPhone 12 Mini despite having a 6.0-inch display. The all-in-one metal body and tiny bezels encircling the phone make it feel more compact, and it’s undoubtedly one of the thinnest phones on the market. There’s a small hole-punch front-facing camera with a fingerprint sensor and a square camera module on the back.

However, there are a couple of unpleasant details to point out about the Pixel 5 design. Its metal volume rocker and lock button on the right side of the device barely protrude from its body, meaning it has more resistance than we thought, thereby making them a bit tough to press. This is unlike the tactile and protruding buttons on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4a which are easier to manipulate.

On the rear panel of the phone is the square camera module that’s nearly similar to the one on the Pixel 4 except for the movement of the flash from the top position to the bottom of the array. Also, there’s a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor that’s positioned towards the top corner in a circular divot. Unfortunately, it’s not as accurate as we’d like, but it’s easy to locate unlike the one on most phones.

The left side of the phone is home to the SIM card tray which comes without an SDcard slot for storage expansion. The USB-C port is placed on the bottom alongside the speaker. Unfortunately, the audio quality is not as impressive as it was on the Pixel 4.

Google Pixel 4: Display

The Google Pixel 5 6-inch OLED panel display with 1080 × 2340 resolution is crisp and sharp with minimal bezels and a punch-hole selfie camera. This is more preferable than the Pixel 4 which sports thick black bezels, although it held the Soli depth sensor and the selfie camera.

Meanwhile, the Pixel 5 display retains that 90Hz refresh rate that’s on its predecessor and it’s similarly smooth here, although a 120Hz refresh rate would have been more appreciated. Unfortunately, this refresh rate drains the battery at a rapid rate, but you can minimize it by switching to 60Hz in the settings.

The Google Pixel 5 packs dual rear cameras which it inherited from the Pixel 4 including the glass-covered camera block, but their performance is not the same. However, both of them sports the same 12.2-MP primary shooter, but the Pixel 5 swaps out its predecessor with a bigger 16-MP ultra-wide lens.

Fortunately, photos taken with the Pixel 5 turns out to be great. However, we faced some issues while trying to focus on closer objects or in motion. Interestingly, daylight shots turned out to be the best with lots of details and a lovely color palette. Also, low light shots had the same, but with a bit of noise.

Also, the Google Pixel 5 comes with its own editing software which has been rearranged into a more friendly interface. Interestingly, Google added a few new features like Portrait Light which brighten objects at particular angles. Unlike other flagship devices, the Pixel 5 relies solely on its software to produce amazing shots with outstanding color gamut and even introduces new tweaks to edit already taken pictures.

Google Pixel 5: Hardware, Performance, and Software

Unfortunately, the Pixel 5 internal specs are one of the few ways where Google failed to impress us, which we discovered was to save cost. The Snapdragon 765G on the Pixel 5 is slightly below the Snapdragon 865 or 865 plus chip that’s on most competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S20 models and OnePlus 8T respectively.

However, the processor is paired with 8GB of RAM which helps to breeze through tasks like streaming videos, surfing the web, or playing games. Also, we didn’t experience any stutter while playing high-end games like PUGB, Call of Duty, and many others. Unfortunately, you’re only limited to a single choice of 128GB built-in storage which you can’t expand through the SDcard just like its predecessor.

The Google Pixel 5 runs on stock Android 11. Interestingly, you’re guaranteed of new interesting features like built-in screen recording, improved smart home controls, and a conversation feature that gathers and stores all your messaging app’s messages in one place.

Google Pixel 5: Battery Capacity

One of the Pixel 5 few improvements over its predecessor is a massive 4080mAh battery capacity. This battery comfortably lasted for 48 hours on average use unlike the 2800mAh battery cell on the Pixel 4 that manages to last for a day.

Google seems to have corrected one of its major flaws on the Pixel 4 by upgrading the battery life to suit the current trend. Also, the Pixel 5 is equipped with a new battery software known as Extreme Battery Saver which goes beyond turning on Dark Mode and halting any background activity to switching off the Wi-Fi and other battery-draining apps.

Also, the Google Pixel 5 supports Qi wireless charging and comes with an 18W fast charger in the box. Fortunately, you can also use the phone as an external device to wirelessly reverse charge other compatible cell phones.

Google Pixel 5: Price in Nigeria and Availability

The Google Pixel 5 was released in Nigeria, US, Australia, and UK on October 15, 2020.

The Google Pixel 5 costs ₦300,000 (roughly $620) and packs 128GB of storage. Unfortunately, Google isn’t offering a higher storage capacity model, and the Pixel doesn’t support microSD cards. It’s available only in Black and Sorta Sage color options.

This is slightly pricier than the Pixel 4, which debuts at ₦311,000(about $799), although it doesn’t come with a few compromises.
