Huawei Y7A Review: Design and Aesthetics

When it comes to design, the Huawei Y7A despite being an affordable device sports an eye-catching glossy rear panel. From this view, the Y7A looks very classic, especially in the Crush Green color option. While being reminiscent of last year’s Y9 Prime, the Huawei Y7A looks better with a rectangular camera module, side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and sleeker design.

Though the Y7A didn’t have a gradient color scheme, it still manages to reproduce glitter effects especially when light reflects on its back. The phone is available in other color options of Blush Gold, and Midnight Black. However, it’s hard to keep the phone absent from fingerprints or smudges unless you’re using the provided transparent silicon case.

Unlike the Y9 Prime, Huawei has resolved back to punch-hole selfie camera which makes the phone slimmer at 165.7 x 76.9 x 9.3 mm. Fortunately, the Huawei Y7A is very comfortable to hold, thanks to its curved back which offers a firm hand grip. For security, the Huawei Y7A is equipped with the trending rear-mounted fingerprint sensor which is a very good alternative to an in-display reader and a better option for fans who are tired of having rear-mounted sensors.

For audio, the Huawei Y7A sports a single, loud-firing speaker. Unfortunately, its audio output it’s not of the best quality, but still preferable to most in other budget smartphones. However, the Y7A audio is great if you’re just watching YouTube or Netflix content, but you’ll need the services of external speakers or headphones for longer binge-watching sessions. Unlike Oukitel C21, the Y7A has a 3.5mm headphone jack which gives you the option to use either wired or wireless headphones.

Other connectivity options of the phone include a SIM/SDcard slot which are positioned on the left side of the phone while the volume rockers and power buttons are perfectly placed on the right for easy reach. Meanwhile, the USB-C port sits on the button alongside a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Huawei Y7A Review: Display

The Huawei Y7A packs a massive 6.67-inch IPS display which is quite big, but what makes it interesting is 1080 × 2400 (Full HD+) resolution which is very good compared to other budget devices with 720p screens. This makes the Y7A a good device for streaming movies, playing games, and more. Also, the screen is bright enough to use under direct sunshine.

Undoubtedly, the screen quality is good enough for a budget smartphone despite lacking an OLED display. Huawei deployed a punch-hole selfie camera on the Y7A which is rarely found on affordable devices as most competitors always feature a teardrop or full bezel design.

Huawei Y7A Review: Cameras

In the camera department, the Y7A is equipped with a 48-MP primary shooter which is assisted by an 8-MP ultra-wide lens, 2-MP macro lens, and another 2-MP depth sensor. Complementing this is an 8MP F/2.0 selfie camera. Just like they were on paper, the cameras produced impressive results making it one of the best mid-range phone cameras.

The 48-MP primary camera makes the Y7A take amazing photos in daylight, including indoors with ample lighting. Also, the color reproduction is cool, with a good amount of details. Unfortunately, the Huawei Y7A struggles at night, especially when using the Auto Mode. Photos turned out blurry with a lack of details and sharpness.

The next 8-MP ultra-wide camera can take quality good wide-angle photos in the daytime. Unlike other mid-range phones, the Y7A does not have many distortions. However, its weakness is also in lowlight selfie coupled that it cannot be used with the phone’s Night Mode which makes it solely lack in detail.

Next is the 2-MP macro camera and it performs exactly how we expect it to be. Once there’s enough light, the macro camera can produce great results that you can ever imagine. For portrait photos, the Y7A takes accurate bokeh effects thanks to the 2-MP sensor. Finally, the 2-MP front-facing camera capture amazing photos that are good for social media binging.

Huawei Y7A Review: Processor Performance and Software

Powering the phone is Huawei’s Kirin 710A processor, one of the new version of Huawei’s in-house Kirin 710 mid-range processor along with 4GB of RAM. The Y7A processor handles basic and high-demanding tasks at ease, but not at Max settings. However, this processor might sound to be outdated, but it’s such a nice option to save cost, and having a decent performance is all you can ask for on a smartphone of this price.

When it comes to storage, the Huawei Y7A is equipped with either 64GB or 128GB of built-in storage with an option to expand via microSD card. On the gaming side, the Mali-G51 MP4 graphics card can only play games in low graphics quality and the overall performance won’t be smooth as expected. However, the Oukitel C21 will be a more durable option at a cheaper price.

The Huawei Y7A comes in the Android 10 operating system on top of Huawei’s EMUI 10.1 user interface. However, the phone doesn’t come with Google Mobile Services, but instead Huawei’s AppGallery or a third-party app store. However, the phone comes with the Huawei MeeTime feature which is missing in the previous MatePad T10s.

Huawei Y7A Review: Battery Capacity

On the battery side, the Huawei Y7A has a long-lasting battery life. Complementing this is an 8MP F/2.0 front camera thanks to its 5000mAh battery capacity. This gives the Y7A up to 48 hours of active time on medium use. Also, Huawei equipped the phone with a 22W charger out of the box. This allows the phone to charge up to 46% in 30 min.

Huawei Y7A Review: Price in Nigeria and Availability

The Huawei Y7A is an excellent budget smartphone with lots of eye-catching features. Why we’d love a bit more gaming power, the Y7A is still a phone worth your time especially at a cheap price tag of ₦110,000 (roughly $278) for the 128GB storage variant.

Meanwhile, the phone is available for purchase via jumia.com.ng/, Naijagadgets, and any other online or offline phone outlet.
