Sure, the Samsung Galaxy S9 may not be the latest S series device, but is still one of the best smartphones from the past couple of years you can buy without spending much. The Galaxy S9 has been replaced by the newer Galaxy S10 and S20 models but it still has some subtle specs that can not be underrated. The Samsung Galaxy S9 building off its prior version it’s an iterative update from the previous Galaxy S8.

Also, if you’ve come across the previous Samsung Galaxy S8, you’ve seen this year’s Galaxy S9. The S9 features a similar design, screen, and RAM size to last year’s model but sports a lot of differences in software and camera. Of course, Samsung being Samsung, there is a raft of interesting features crammed into the S9 worth appealing and compete on the commercial market. Similar appearance and specs don’t make the S9 and it’s Plus model bad phones, a lot of improvements and unnecessary features has been altered.

The Galaxy S9 was introduced to correct the major flaws of the S8. The screen is now brighter, and the dual speakers are now more of studio audio. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S9 now features a fingerprint and face unlock support, something which the previous model failed at. These plus points make the Galaxy S9 more expensive to buy. Meanwhile, the larger S9 Plus with 6.2-inches display is pricier.

However, the Samsung Galaxy S9 is among the cheapest Samsung Galaxy phones you can buy and it’s a lot cheaper than the S10 range. If you’re considering buying the Samsung Galaxy S9, we’ve written the full review and compared the total specs, so check out and read our full in-depth analysis on the Galaxy S9.

Samsung Galaxy S9: Design and Build-up

When you take a glance at the Galaxy S9, you’ll hardly differentiate it from the previous model’s S8. Let’s say the Samsung Galaxy S9 is just a carbon copy of the S9… but the S9 is slightly wider and heavier than last year’s own. Meanwhile, the top and bottom bezels have been slightly altered, producing a larger screen display that’ll be more comfortable in the hand.

Also, Samsung has improved in quality of the phone, the Gorilla Glass 5 protection is a big step forward, and the one that’ll be a strong competitor to other phones. The aluminum panel material used to make the phone is more robust thereby making the phone less twisting in case of any accident. However, the protection doesn’t mean you should avoid using the phone’s case. Without this case, you’re well exposed to nicks and stuffings.

While the Galaxy S9 and S8 are very similar up front, turning the rear side of the phone will reveal some big differences. The fingerprint scanner has now been shifted to beneath the phone’s square camera module, making it easy for quick accessibility. Also, the S9’s Iris scanner is now placed in the top black bezel, making the phone’s screen more clean and sharp to look at.

However, Samsung continues to offer a headphone jack even when Apple has altered it on their recent iPhones. However, this is welcomed by some fans who don’t have extra cash to invest in external Bluetooth headphones, but loves plugging that wired earphones on their ear. The 3.5mm headphone jack is well positioned on the bottom left corner of the device.

However, we don’t like the way the Bixby button remains unchanged in the right middle. Though Bixby is a great attribute of this device, that won’t be enough to warrant a special position or dedicated key. Sometimes, you’ll misplace this button for the volume rockers which is uncalled for.

Of course, the Samsung Galaxy S9 is an attractive device with lots of hardware. Another backside of this device is that it sucks up a fingerprint. The rear of the phone is not fingerprint-resistant and in no distance time, the back of your phone will be in a smudgy mess. This is a natural problem for every phone made with a rear glass panel, though a quick wipe will restore the phone to its perfect shiny look.

Also, there’s a new range of colors to choose from. The Samsung Galaxy S9 is available in beautiful colors of Midnight Black, Coral Blue, Titanium Gray, Lilac Purple, Burgundy Red, Sunrise Gold, and Ice Blue. These colors are attractive in the eyes, giving the phone a premium aesthetic design.

Samsung Galaxy S9: Display

As we’ve earlier said, and we’ll say it again, the Samsung Galaxy S9 sports a similar display as the Galaxy S8. The Galaxy S9 screen has been proven to be the very best in the market, delivering the best color reproduction, vivid and accurate display, exceptional brightness, and overall sharpness. Samsung also deployed DisplayMate in the Galaxy S9, meaning you can see more of the screen action while in bright sunlight.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 5.8-inches display offers more phenomenal quality with the color reproduction and brightness proven faultless. Also, the Super AMOLED display produces images that are accurate and real to life than ever before.

Meanwhile, while we found no fault with the screen display, the auto-brightness is not worth commendable. The Galaxy S9 strays on being too bright, and that always drains the battery. Also, the left and right side of the display rolled down to the chassis, giving the phone a curvy display.

Samsung Galaxy S9: Camera Review

This is the big take away that’ll inspire you to buy this phone. The 12-MP single-sensor camera on the Galaxy S9 features a dual-aperture technology that makes low light performance incredible. Also, the f/2.4 aperture improved the bright scenes which will make the images more effective.

Fortunately, there are lots of upgraded photography modes to choose from, and almost all of them will give you the best image shots. Also, shooting in low light conditions is very excellent when compared to other top-end phones like the iPhone X.On the front camera side, the 8-MP selfie camera also handles low light shots perfectly as well. Unlike other phones, you’ll struggle to have a bad photo with the Samsung Galaxy S9. There is a Panorama and Portrait mode that blurs the photo background which can be compared to the TrueDepth camera on the iPhone XS.

Samsung Galaxy S9: Performance and Software

The overall performance of the Galaxy S9 is pretty good and fast notwithstanding the kind of task given. The Samsung Galaxy S9 comes equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset coupled with 4GB RAM for fast system response. There are triple inbuilt storage options of 60GB, 128GB, and 256GB which you can choose to upgrade by adding up to 400GB SDcard.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 hardware delivers an incredible and fast user experience with all types of high-end games like Asphalt 9, PUBG, Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition running smoothly and apps loading rapidly.

Out of the box, the Samsung Galaxy S9 is packed with Android 8.0 Oreo on top of One UI 2.1 user interface. This software runs pretty fast on this device with lots of customizable options and inbuilt apps that have already occupied half of the phone’s storage.

Samsung Galaxy S9: Battery Capacity

Unfortunately, we’re not happy with the insufficient battery life deployed in the Galaxy S9, as it’s not upgraded as we expected. The Samsung Galaxy S9 packs a 3000mAh battery just like the Galaxy S8, but this time around there are more battery-draining display and efficient processor. Also, the general problem with Android phones of having nefarious apps running in the background will amount to more power drainage.

However, wireless charging is enabled once again with Qi and PMA standards making the Galaxy S9 charge on any wireless pad. Also, there’s a 15w fast charging with wired charging support that’ll fully power the Galaxy S9 within the space of 2 hours.

Samsung Galaxy S9: Price and Availability

Since the launch of the Galaxy S9, the price is much more cheaper now that you can even pick one for about a third of the initial launch price.
