OnePlus 8 Pro Review: Full Specifications, Features, and Price in Nigeria

OnePlus latest flagship 8 Pro puts Samsung, Oppo, and Huawei on notice, after featuring a 5G network, sleek design, 120Hz screen, great cameras, and even wireless charging support. The OnePlus 8 Pro is a range-topping and decent smartphone. Forget the preceding generations of smartphones from the mediocre brand, and flagship killer. OnePlus is now officially among the biggest name in the mobile phone market.

Whilst it’s predecessor – OnePlus 7 Pro and 7T Pro cut a few corners to keep it cool and maintain a slightly lower price that’ll sell in the competition, the OnePlus 8 Pro isn’t pulling any punches, in fact, it’s now a great competitor to the likes of Huawei P40 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus. Interestingly, this smartphone is a true flagship richly specced to be a strong competitor in the market, whereas the OnePlus Nord offers a more affordable option with decent specs too.

Since the OnePlus 8T won’t have a Pro version, the OnePlus 8 Pro is the current most specced phone coming from the firm, packing high-end specs and features, including the latest 5G connectivity. Among it’s numerous features is the best display ever made on the 8 Pro, with the company claiming it’s the best screen you’ll see on a smartphone this year.

OnePlus has finally given the fans what they’ve been asking for, and what’s absent in most flagship phones – wireless charging. Not only that, it’s super fast too. The battery can charge from 0-50% in just 30 minutes. Also, the phone features the biggest battery capacity ever seen in a OnePlus handset, and can comfortably last over 24 hours on one single charge.

Does the OnePlus 8 Pro have all the needed specs and features to make it a hit in the market? Read our full review and verdict about the latest OnePlus 8 Pro, alongside its current price in Nigeria.

OnePlus 8 Pro Review: Design and Build-up

The OnePlus 8 Pro has the same premium look and feels like most other top-tier phones. The front panel is dominated by a large 6.78-inch display, that curves down vertically on the left and right edges. The front and rear glass are sandwiched with a metal-frame that goes around the circumference of the body. Meanwhile, the rear panel is protected with a superior matte-frosted Gorilla Glass 5. This feels more tactile and smooth than the rear of iPhone 11 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20+.

Whilst the OnePlus 8 Pro has a premium design, the phone can be a little slippy which might be caused by the curved display. However, that won’t be a problem as you can opt to use the transparent silicone case that’s included in the box. This will cover the premium aesthetic, as any other translucent case does, but the protection of your expensive phone is more important than the aesthetic.

The vertical camera stack housed in the center of the rear panel is very noticeable, whether or not you’re using the provided case. However, it pretty much matches the design of the phone, so there’s nothing much to worry about here.

At 165.3 x 74.35 x 8.5mm dimension, you’ll easily notice that the OnePlus 8 Pro is a very large handset, and will require two hands operation to hold it securely. This handset is taller and wider than iPhone 11 Pro, Huawei P40 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus. Despite having a larger screen than the aforementioned phones, it’s still the middle man when it comes to weight – at 199g.

There’s just a single port on the 8 Pro, and that’s the USB-C port on the base. Just like other top-tier phones, there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack here, which means you’ll have to rely only on the wireless Bluetooth connection if you want to listen to the audio. This is flanked by the speaker and dual-SIM slot. The power button is positioned on the right side of the phone – a long press of this will call-on the Google assistant, while a double press will launch the camera. The volume keys are found on the left side, and they’re easy to reach with one-hand when holding the phone.

The pop-up selfie camera that was found on the 7 Pro and 7T Pro has been dropped here. The OnePlus 8 Pro now features a punch-hole selfie camera in the top-left corner instead. This is the first introduction of this feature on OnePlus handset, and it reduces weight and frees up space unlike the 7 Pro and 7T. Apart from Glacial Green, the OnePlus 8 Pro is available in two other color options of Onyx Black and Ultramarine Blue.

The OnePlus 8 Pro is the first handset from the company to have an IP rating protection against dust and water. However, previous generations are equipped with dust and water-resistant, but there’s no official rating by OnePlus. With an IP68 rating, the OnePlus 8 Pro is fully protected against submersion in water for 30 minutes and dust ingress. Which means you’re free to take your phone to swim, or to the bathroom.

OnePlus 8 Pro Review: 120Hz Fluid Display

The biggest feature of this phone according to OnePlus is the 8 Pro’s “Fluid Display”. The Chinese brand claimed that this is the best display you’ll see this year. Meanwhile, the company seems to be extremely proud of the phone’s display, and their claim seems to be true as this is among the best screen we’ve come across.

OnePlus 8 Pro 6.78-inches display, 1440 x 3168 pixels resolution, 513ppi pixel density, and tall 19.8:9 aspect ratio are comparable to most high-end phones these days, but the 8 Pro’s panel is out of this world.

120Hz refresh rate is becoming a must-go spec for many brands. A trend that was first introduced by Razer Phone back in 2017. Since then, many companies have been following this motive, while some are bringing higher refresh rates to their smartphones. These high refresh rates bring better graphical fluidity in games and smoother scrolling in apps.

However, recently released flagship phones like Google Pixel 4 XL, Huawei P40 Pro, and OnePlus 7T Pro are all stack with 90Hz screens. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus packs a 120Hz maximum refresh rate setting which is not set by default. What makes OnePlus 8 Pro outstanding is that its 120Hz refresh rate is switched on by default, although it’s struct at only FHD+. However, you can switch it to QHD+ resolution in the phone’s settings.

OnePlus 8 Pro Review: Cameras

The OnePlus 8 Pro is equipped with quad rear cameras. This is the first time that OnePlus stack four-camera set-up on a handset. OnePlus is focused on improving its cameras, and they meant business. The OnePlus 8 Pro features not one, but two 48-MP Sony sensors.

When you launch the camera app on the 8 Pro, the default camera is a 48-MP sensor, which is the biggest on any OnePlus smartphone. It’s a Sony IMX689 lens with f/1.78 aperture, optical image stabilization (OIS), electronic image stabilization (EIS), and offers up to 4k video shooting.

Beside this is another 48-MP ultra-wide-angle Sony IMX586 lens with f/2.2 aperture, and 119.7-degree field of view. This is not the widest sensor on a handset, but it’s wide enough to provide extra landscape into each shot.

Above this is the brand new 5-MP color filter lens with a broader f/2.4 aperture, and focuses on bringing Instagram-like filters into the camera app. At the bottom of the stack is the fourth and last camera that’s positioned on the left side of the camera bump. This is the phone’s 8-MP telephoto lens with 3× optical and 30× digital zoom. Meanwhile, we’ve seen numerous smartphones with up to 100× zoom just like Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. However, OnePlus said that they’re not yet ready to go beyond 30× for now.

There’s numerous great photography hardware here at your disposal that’ll give you the best camera quality. These cameras are a big upgrade over the ones found on the OnePlus 7 Pro and 7T, and produces almost real-life shots in terms of colors. There’s a nightscape mode that helps in low-light shots just as the name suggests. Despite taking 2-3 seconds before snapping, this does brighten dark modes.

OnePlus 8 Pro Review: Hardware Performance and Software

Under the hood, there’s plenty of power in the OnePlus 8 Pro, with the phone packing Qualcomm’s high-end Snapdragon 865 chipset, with Qualcomm’s X55 5G modem to provide super-fast internet speed.

This paired with either 8GB or 12GB RAM which ensures the phone handles all types of task, from high-graphic PUBG to movie marathons, and box-set binges. The OnePlus 8 Pro is a very powerful device and has a strong network connection, thanks to 5G capabilities. Also, there’s 128GB and 256GB built-in storage, and we discovered the system took up to 20GB from that space. This means that you’re left with 108GB and 236GB of usable storage respectively.

The OnePlus 8 Pro is shipped with OnePlus OxygenOS 11 interface on top of Google’s Android 10 operating system. This OnePlus OxygenOS offers numerous customizable options, including quick gestures that can toggle the torchlight, open an app of your choice, or launch the camera. Also, there’s a dark mode and its availability extends to all pre-installed apps.

OnePlus 8 Pro Review: Battery Capacity and Charging

The OnePlus 8 Pro is equipped with a 4510mAh battery cell, which is the largest on the OnePlus handset, and bigger than the power pack in rival Huawei P40 Pro, Apple iPhone 11 Pro, and Samsung S20 Plus phones. We’re not surprised at how the OnePlus 8 Pro was able to last comfortably for more than 24 hours on a single charge, with average typical usage of messaging, video calls, photography, gaming, and social media.

OnePlus has improved it’s 30W charging to now get you from 0-50% in 23 minutes (as advertised) via a wired connection, while 0-50% in 30 minutes through wireless charging. This is the first time OnePlus will equip wireless charging on its handset, and it’s called Warp Charge 30 Wireless. Meanwhile, you can use this phone as a charging mat to power other Qi-enabled devices such as smartphones, headphones, etc.
