The Oppo Reno 5 5G is specifically designed to take Oppo’s flagship devices to the next level. Of the many 5G smartphones to buy currently, few are completely unique. It’s quite unfortunate that most of them are just versions of 4G handsets with a 5G network, but that’s not the case with Reno 5 5G.
The Oppo Reno 5 5G is among the best smartphones you can buy right now, having a lot of interesting features and offering in what can be tagged affordable segment. Apart from being one of the best affordable flagship devices out there, the Reno 5G is one of the best 5G phones. Surprisingly, the Reno 5G is cheaper than most 4G phones out there. That’s just the power of Oppo devices for you.
Also, Oppo Reno 5 5G features one of the best-advanced cameras on a smartphone, including an excellent front camera that’s anything but cheesy. Apart from that, Oppo’s ColorOS UI is among the best you can find now, including an Android overlay that’ll make your smartphone experience very memorable. On the next subheading is our in-depth exploration of the phone, including the current price in Nigeria.

Oppo Reno 5 5G: Design
The Oppo Reno 5G has some pretty tasty sleek design as the 10x Zoom with the iconic motorized pop-up at the top that houses the selfie camera. Fortunately, the back panel is so smooth with no camera bump as the lenses rest with the back. Also, it sports that familiar glass framework you see everywhere, but we found out the rear panel is matte rather than the normal glossy finish. This is also the kind of build-up found on the OnePlus 7.
However, the power button and volume rocker are placed on the right and left corner respectively, while the USB-C port sits below. However, there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack just like most flagship devices, so if you’re a wired fan you might need an adapter. Unfortunately, there’s a little raised dot on the rear panel that disrupts the smooth surface of the phone making it not comfortably lie on its back. This is one unpleasant design that might get you annoyed anytime it wobble.
Meanwhile, the motorized pop-up front-facing camera is among the many talking points of this phone. This is unusual in the flagship segment, but a perfect alternative to replace those dot that normally houses the selfie cameras on smartphones. It consists of a metal and glass that holds the lens, including a flash.
Unfortunately, the phone is quite big with 162 x 77.2 x 9.3 mm dimensions that’ll make it quite uncomfortable for one-handed use. Also, it’s heavy too, at 215g, which ranks it among the heaviest smartphones which will weigh more if you plan on using a solid phone case.
Oppo Reno 5 5G: Display
When it comes to display, you’re getting a 6.6-inch AMOLED screen with 1080 x 2340 pixels resolution. This is a fairly big display for streaming movies or watching games, but it would be considered average among other 5G phones. Interestingly, this is one of the best displays we’ve come across, with a high Max brightness and bold color production. The smooth AMOLED panel will give you the best experience when streaming a movie or playing games.
Also, this phone’s display comes with no punch-hole or notches, thanks to the motorized pop-up front-camera that paves way for an uninterruptible viewing experience. Of course, this is a bright and colorful display, what else will you expect from a great AMOLED screen.
Oppo Reno 5 5G: Cameras
One of the most important features of the Reno 5G is impressive camera lenses. On paper, the Reno 5G and Oppo Reno 10× Zoom have the same camera arrangements. The triple rear camera consists of a 48-MP primary shooter assisted by a 13-MP periscope lens and an 8-MP ultra-wide sensor. On the motorized pop-up front camera is a 16-MP selfie camera.
However, the Reno 5G main camera focus goes to the zoom functions. There’s a whopping 60× digital zoom which brings an object closer than you can ever imagine, alongside 10× hybrid and 5× optical zoom functions. Also, the camera performs great for portrait shots, having a perfectly blurred background without blurring any part of the object. This also applies to photos taken with the selfie camera.
Fortunately, the 5G element makes uploading pictures to Google Photos or whatever cloud storage you want to use easier. Of course, you can upload your photos straight to social media after snapping. However, the biggest impact is for users who love uploading videos online as it’s quicker than a 4G LTE or Wi-Fi connection.
Oppo Reno 5 5G: Hardware, Performance, and Software
The Oppo Reno 5G is equipped with a Snapdragon 855 chipset, which ranks among the best processors as of writing, delivering a very snappy performance, whether it’s for photo editing or gaming. Also, the 8GB of RAM is more than enough too, delivering a very effective performance for all kinds of tasks. This combination with 5G connectivity makes the internet speed to be quick when playing games online. There’s a single storage variant of 256GB with a microSD card that shares the same slot with SIM card.
The Oppo Reno 5G runs on a bit outdated Android 9 Pie, with Oppo’s ColorOS 6 on top. As with most custom UIs, your likeliness of ColorOS largely depends on your personal taste. However, there’s a perk in ColorOS that makes it unique with most of 5G.
Oppo Reno 5 5G: Battery Capacity
The Reno 5G battery life seems to be the weakest element, and this might be caused because of the AMOLED panel and 5G network.
The Oppo Reno 5G is powered by a 4065mAh battery cell, just like the Reno 10× zoom. Apart from having an average battery life, we found out the phone didn’t last long enough compared to most mid-rangers. However, while the Reno 10× Zoom could comfortably last for more than a day, the Reno 5G struggled to stay active for 24 hours. For most people who use their phones for just calls, this won’t be an issue, but for heavy users, you’ll need to get your charger connected all the time.
Fortunately, charging the device won’t take long, thanks to Oppo’s VOOC fast-charging tech which powers the phone at 20W. That’s not the fastest we’ve seen, as most of Oppo’s flagship devices are equipped with up to 60W fast-charge.
Oppo Reno 5 5G: Price in Nigeria and Availability
The Oppo Reno 5G is currently available in all leading smartphone outlets in Nigeria, UK, and Australia. However, the phone won’t be available in the US because of government restrictions on Chinese companies.
The Oppo Reno 5G is currently available for ₦130,000 (roughly $332) for the 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage variant. However, if your country is not using the 5G network yet, there’s no point in spending much in buying a 5G device, instead, you can choose to spend lower on another cheaper alternative.
