The Samsung Galaxy A51 is one of the affordable smartphones you can buy in Nigeria if you can’t afford to pick up the pricy Galaxy S20 or Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite. Fortunately, 2020 has to go down in history as the year of affordable smartphones. Of course, a lower price phone comes with lesser specs than Samsung’s pricier phones.
The rear panel of Galaxy A51 is plastic rather than glass, the cameras aren’t as good as the Galaxy S20, and less powerful processor. Also, there’s an absence of nice-to-have extras like water-resistant just like the Galaxy A71. Meanwhile, Samsung has released a tweaked version called the Galaxy A51 5G. However, the only big difference between the two phones is the latter have a stronger processor with additional 5G network connectivity.
At ₦130,000, you’ll get a Super AMOLED screen and software that’s similar to those on the Galaxy S20 series. Obviously, other Android alternatives like Oppo Reno 2Z and Moto G8 Plus have fewer performance issues than Galaxy A51. Thankfully, games plays smoothly – PUBG fans, don’t worry.
However, the Samsung Galaxy A51 offers plenty of value for this price tag in terms of gorgeous design, strong battery life, decent camera, and amazing display quality. While the Samsung Galaxy A51 has many strong competitors, we’ve reviewed the total specs and features of the phone to know whether it’s worth your buy.

Samsung Galaxy A51: Design and Build-up
Put simply, the Galaxy A51 offers some of the design traits of Samsung’s high-end devices. The display borders are slim, and the phone measures 158.5 x 73.6 x 7.9mm dimensions. The phone is light and narrow enough for comfy one hand use. However, the front panel is dominated by a near bezel-less display with the front camera positioned on the Infinity-O punch hole. Meanwhile, the Galaxy A51 is made of a sturdy plastic back rather than glass while the front is protected by Gorilla Glass 3.

On the back, you’ll find a similar rectangular camera module in the top left corner that’s on the Galaxy A71. This phone can pass for an expensive flagship Samsung at a distance with its shiny rainbow pinstripe texture. This is a relatively subtle look, with a fair size too that’s made for games and movie streaming. The Samsung Galaxy A51 size is slightly wider than the Galaxy S20, making it preferable when it comes to a big display.
Like other A series, the Galaxy A71 offers no official water-resistance. However, there’s a 3.5mm headphone port which is handy if you are the type that dislikes wireless Bluetooth headphones. While most Samsung phones don’t attract fingerprints, the Galaxy A51 will be covered with fingerprints within a short period of usage, so your best bet is to make use of the provided phone case. The Samsung A51 is available in Black, White, Blue, and Pink color options.
The Galaxy A51 has an in-display scanner too, another smart motive by Samsung to make the Galaxy A51 have a high-end look. However, this is slower than most phones and will fail to recognize your fingers if you didn’t position your them well, or they’re slightly wet.

The top edge of the Galaxy A51 is empty, while the bottom is occupied by the speaker grill, USB-C port, and headphone jack. On the top left side, you’ll find the dual-SIM/microSD card slot, and on the right are the volume rockers and power button.
Samsung Galaxy A51: Display
The Samsung Galaxy A51 has a 6.5-inches Super AMOLED display with a Full HD+ resolution (1080 × 2400). This is one feature that’ll make the Galaxy A51 more marketable as many phones with this price have LCD panels. There’s a higher 405ppi density and the color reproduction is vivid and sharp by default. The display too is crisp and bright that you’ll be able to view contents in direct sunlight.

However, the Samsung Galaxy A51 AMOLED screen is not bright enough to watch movies in sunlight comfortably, but it’s clear when viewing contents that don’t require high screen brightness. Issues aside this is not a problem for the A51, the punch-hole would be a doubt for obstructing your view.

Samsung Galaxy A51: Camera Review
The Samsung Galaxy A51 sports a rear four-camera stack. There’s a 48-MP main camera, 12-MP ultra-wide lens, 5-MP macro lens, and another 5-MP depth sensor. In daylight shots, all photos will look crisp, with excellent depth of field. The colors are vivid and natural though they’re slightly oversaturated, but that’s one problem with Samsung phones.
Lowlight shots are excellent as well, unlike most mid-range smartphones. The main camera and ultra-wide lens delivered some edge noise and lack of detail, but there are no flares, making it more preferable than most smartphone of this range. Meanwhile, the blurring take effect with great charming object recognition that’ll make you doubt whether the photo is actually taken with a mobile phone of some Chinese high-end camera.
On the front is a 32-MP selfie camera with an f/2.2 aperture. Photos taken with the Galaxy A51 selfie camera are solid with excellent color accuracy. The wide-angle mode will blur the background, but not consistently. The Samsung Galaxy A51 camera can shoot 4k videos @30 frames per second and 1080p at 120fps.
Hardware, Performance, and Software
The Samsung Galaxy A51 comes with Exynos 9611 chipset and not the usual Qualcomm Snapdragon we use to see on mid-range phones. The phone’s performance can be compared to similarly priced Google Pixel 3a and Apple iPhone SE. Meanwhile, apps take longer time to load than we expected and there will be some caching when there are more than ten open apps. Sometimes lags like this can be caused by the chipset used or the RAM model you choose.
The Samsung Galaxy A51 has 4GB, 6GB, or 8GB of RAM with 64GB or 128GB inbuilt storage which you can choose to upgrade through microSD card.

Games plays well with the assistance of Game Booster which helps in the gaming performance. Asphalt 9 and PUBG played well too, even though they take time to load, but you’ll enjoy the best of the game once it starts.
The Samsung Galaxy A51 runs Android 10 with Samsung’s One UI 2.5 user interface which is similar to Galaxy S20. This is one of the easiest and friendly-looking interface around with a toy-like look and wide icon spacing. The pages layout of One UI 2.5 is pretty good and the best. Its apps menu are in pages rather than a long scroll of apps like in HiOS, and you can equally arrange them into folders.
Samsung Galaxy A51: Battery Capacity
The Samsung Galaxy A51 is powered by a 4000mAh cell that’s very efficient for a 6.5-inches AMOLED screen. The battery life is reasonably enough to give you more than 24 hours of active service upon full charge. Meanwhile, the Galaxy A51 does come with a lower-end 15W fast charger which will power the phone from 0 to 50% within 30 minutes.

Samsung Galaxy A51: Price in Nigeria and Availability
The Samsung Galaxy A51 is made for those who want an affordable phone and will rather own a Samsung than other Android brands like Xiaomi, Tecno, or Oppo. The Samsung Galaxy A51 costs ₦130,000 ($341) so it’s a fairly priced phone. The Galaxy A51 competes most with Google Pixel 4a at ₦210,000 (roughly $551), and the 2020 model iPhone SE at ₦210,000 (about $551).
It’s worth knowing that the Galaxy A51 has a subsequently release 5G version that’ll cost ₦183,000 ($483). While it’s more expensive than the 4G version, it’s not too expensive as other 5G phones.
