Huawei Y9 Prime Review: Features and Price in Nigeria

Huawei after dominating the smartphone photography world with the brilliant Huawei P40 Pro wasted no time in bringing another impressive device – the Huawei Y9 Prime. The latest Y9 Prime mid-range offering focusing on providing plenty of value for fans who want the best out of a smartphone but can’t afford to spend more. In 2019, the company recorded over 118 million shipments despite the ongoing tussle with the US government.

In Nigeria, the Y9 Prime will be available for grabs at ₦95,000 for the 4/128GB variant. At that price point, the phone has gone head-to-head with the Google Pixel 3a and even Redmi Note 7 Pro and sports several distinctive features that help it compete.

Meanwhile, the Huawei Y9 Prime is here to make its mark in a segment dominated by Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro. With a minimal screen bezel, pop-up selfie, Kirin 710F chipset, and 4000mAh battery life, the Y9 Prime has all it’s needed to strive in the smartphone market. On the next sub-heading is our full review and verdict about the Huawei Y9 Prime.

Huawei Y9 Prime Review: Design and Aesthetics

Huawei Y9 Prime Review: Design and Aesthetics

The Huawei Y9 Prime features a plastic back of which you can mistake for glass because of its reflective coating which looks rather vibrant. The phone is available in Emerald Green, Midnight Black, and Sapphire Blue colors. Fortunately, the phone reproduces glitter effects when light falls on its back. However, it’s hard to keep the phone free of smudges and fingerprints unless you’re using the provided silicon case.

The Huawei Y9 Prime is thick because of its pop-up selfie camera at 8.8mm and it’s slightly heavy weighing around 196.8g. In comparison, the Realme X is at 191g while the Redmi Note 7 Pro clocks in around 186g. However, the Y9 Prime is very comfortable to hold, thanks to its curved back which offers a firm hand grip.

One bad disadvantage of this motorized pop-up camera is that it doesn’t fit symmetrically into its module and one can easily notice the gap between the camera and the chassis. Also, you’ll have to be extra careful and ensure no dust finds its way into the motorized carriage. However, we would love to have the punch-hole or drew-drop notch then have to worry about the little occupied space rather than keeping track of this liability.

On the rear panel, the Y9 Prime is equipped with the trending multiple camera set-ups (triple-lens), and because it’s a budget phone, a reflective plastic rear fingerprint reader. A rear or side-mounted fingerprint scanner is the right alternative over an in-display own given that the latter is barely sensitive. We would rather love to see a physically dedicated fingerprint reader that’s always on budget smartphones other than having those overrated ones on flagship phones all in the name of trends.

Rounding out the design is a 3.5mm headphone jack and USB-C port on the bottom edge including a SIM/SDcard slot that sits on top of the phone, opposite the pop-up camera. Also, the volume rocker and power button are well positioned on the top right corner of the handset.

Huawei Y9 Prime: Display

Huawei Y9 Prime Review: Display

The Huawei Y9 Prime sports a 6.59-inch Full HD+ (1080 × 2340) display and uses an LTPS IPS panel with an 84.3% screen-to-body ratio. However, there’s no additional screen protection which is a bummer as all the recent mid-range phones are equipped with Gorilla Glass protection.

Although the Y9 Prime lacks the depth and contrast of the AMOLED panel, it still manages to bring out well vivid display that you can see in direct sunshine. Meanwhile, Huawei is admirably concerned with giving its fans the best value for their money – this is arguably the best display you’ll come across on this price range.

Huawei Y9 Prime: Cameras

Huawei Y9 Prime Review: Cameras

The Huawei Y9 Prime features triple cameras on the back which consists of a 16-MP primary shooter alongside an 8-MP ultra-wide lens and a 2-MP depth sensor. Also, there’s another 16-MP motorized selfie camera located at the top-left edge of the phone.

When you trigger the front-camera from the camera app, the module slides up to reveal the selfie camera and automatically slides down after use. Fortunately, in any case of an accidental drop, the pop-up camera will smartly pullback before the phone hits the ground. Also, Huawei revealed that the pop-up camera can withstand up to 15kg pressure.

Huawei was able to improve the camera performance beyond expectations. The camera app is equipped with many photo enhancement modes including AR effect, Bokeh, Panorama, landscape mode, etc. Unfortunately, aperture and night mode weren’t effective as the P40 Pro and fans who are used to it will be disappointed.

Huawei Y9 Prime: Processor Performance and Software

The Huawei Y9 Prime is powered by a Kirin 710F chipset with an octa-core CPU clocked at 2.2GHz and 4GB of RAM. Meanwhile, the Y9 Prime has Mali-G51 MP4 as the graphics chip. This is paired by either 64GB or 128GB built-in storage that can be further increased up to 512GB via SDcard. Fortunately, this processor is sufficient enough to handle intensive apps and games more than the P30 Pro, thereby making it more reliable and a better option.

The Huawei Y9 Prime runs on a smooth and efficient Android 9 Pie-based EMUI 9. While the OS seems a bit outdated making you not having the latest and most fluid Android experience, it’s still a better option than other phones of this range. Fortunately, there’s a GPU Turbo 3.0 that helps to enhance the phone’s gaming performance.

Huawei Y9 Prime: Battery Capacity

Huawei Y9 Prime Review: Battery Capacity

Amazingly, the phone is filled with a massive 4000mAh battery but sadly fails to support fast charging. Fortunately, you can use the Y9 Prime for more than a day without connecting it to a charger. The absence of a fast charger will make you feel uncomfortable after charging the phone for more than one hour especially if you’re downgrading from a more expensive handset.

Huawei Y9 Prime: Price in Nigeria and Availability

Decent display and amazing performance are the two most selling point of this handset. Huawei despite cutting a few corners to fit the Y9 Prime into the budget segment still offers one of the best spec-rich features you’ll ever see. Meanwhile, you can pick up any of the Huawei Y9 Prime for a retail price of ₦95,000 (roughly $249).

The phone is available for purchase via,, and any other online or offline phone outlet.
