OnePlus 9 Pro Review: Full Specifications, Features, and Price

The OnePlus 9 Pro is a culmination of the company’s strive to take over the European smartphone market, and it’s the first handset from the Chinese-based phone brand to tick all rounds. Simply put, the latest flagship device from OnePlus is nothing short of super impressive.

Of course, there have been a lot of improvements, starting from the great top-level cameras that have all the features you’d expect from a high-end smartphone right now. Also, to bring out the best photography experience, OnePlus has to team up with the camera experts – Hasselbald to introduce a lot of camera tweaks. Genuinely speaking, this smartphone has all it takes to compete with the very best smartphones from the biggest brands.

However, when it comes to price, there’s no point denying the fact that the OnePlus 9 Pro comes with a high-end price tag. However, if you’re looking for something more affordable from OnePlus, you can check out the OnePlus 3T and the original OnePlus 9.

While you’re getting a lot of interesting features, it’s good to know that this comes with few compromises too. The OnePlus 9 Pro’s size might be a turn-off for fans who love having a small-sized phone. Also, microSD support is absent here which is not a surprise to us anymore. Fortunately, the pretty large built-in storage space is more than enough to occupy all your files.

Meanwhile, the device features one of the best aesthetics we’ve ever reviewed with a glass rear and a triple choice of colors to ensure the OnePlus 9 Pro matches your style. Also, there’s a massive 6.7-inch QHD AMOLED display that delivers amazing brightness levels with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate and high-end details.

Undoubtedly, the OnePlus 9 Pro is the best handset from the Chinese brand, and while it’s an expensive device, it can comfortably compete with the likes of the iPhone 12 Pro Max or the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra with almost the same specs to justify that price.

The OnePlus 9 Pro doesn’t sport any major design changes, but rather some touch of the company’s last few handset designs starting from the OnePlus 7.

However, it features premium aesthetics and feeling when on your hands. The phone comes with a glass rear and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. Also, you’re getting a mixture of three choices of colors including Morning Mist, Forest Green, and Stellar Black. However, the availability of some colors depends on your geographical location, so don’t set your hope high on a particular color until you’ve seen the available one.

Fortunately, OnePlus has trimmed down the camera bump on the handset, unlike its predecessors. You’ll find the Hasslebald logo inscribed on the camera alongside the quad-camera arrangement.

The back of the OnePlus 9 Pro curves gently at the edges which pages way for a more proper hand grip. However, this isn’t a small device and it measures 163.2 x 73.6 x 8.7mm dimensions and weight just 197 grams which is good for a phone with these specs.

Fortunately, the edges are bonded by aluminum and on the right side is the power button that’s accompanied by a silent slider that enables you to quickly mute your phone. Meanwhile, the volume rocker is positioned on the left side of the phone. The SIM card tray, speaker grill, and USB-C charging port occupy the bottom edge.

Overall, the OnePlus 9 Pro features one of the best aesthetics that can rival any top-end flagship device that’s on the market currently. Although there are no many design changes here, it’s still one of the best available.

By mere looking at the smartphone, you’ll easily notice that this is a pretty large device with a high-resolution display befitting its status. It features a 6.7-inch AMOLED panel with a QHD resolution of 3216 x 1440 pixels. As you’d expect, the screen brightness is great with an auto-brightness mode that changes depending on the current scenario. However, if you’re in direct sunlight, you’ll likely have to tweak the brightness features for you to access the screen contents properly.

Fortunately, the OnePlus 9 Pro display has a 120Hz refresh rate which is among the best on flagship Android devices. By having a 120Hz refresh rate, the display refreshes 120 times per second. This is more than 60 times on most smartphones like the iPhone 12 which comes with a 60Hz refresh rate.

Before now, OnePlus smartphones have always struggled to bring out the best camera performance, but the OnePlus 9 Pro comes with one of the best cameras we’ve seen in this segment. Fortunately, the Chinese phone brand has stepped up its game by equipping new sensors with one of them being made with Sony and teaming up with a top-notch camera maker – Hasselblad.

The rear quad camera arrangement consists of a 48-MP Sony IMX789 primary shooter, 50-MP Sony IMX766 ultra-wide sensor, 8-MP telephoto lens, and 2-MP monochrome shooter. Upfront is a 16-MP Sony IMX766 sensor with f/2.4 aperture.

The main sensor of the OnePlus 9 Pro is the king of this camera arrangement. It sports some major improvements and takes more natural-looking photos than other OnePlus handsets. Also, images look fantastic with great-looking colors and enough details. Undoubtedly, the image quality of this sensor is comparable to those on Apple’s iPhones and Samsungs.

Fortunately, you can easily switch to the 50-MP ultra-wide sensor with a single tab on the virtual sensor. Also, photos taken are good too with a distortion correction technology to reduce the barrel distortion that normally appears at the edges of most ultra-wide shots.

Another great commendable work of OnePlus camera prowess is the telephoto lens ability to shoot up to 3x optical zoom which can also switch up to 30x zoom. Images taken are great and good for social media upload. However, as you’d expect, photos will get worse as you zoom in further unlike the one on Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.

OnePlus 9 Pro: Specs, Performance, and Software

Fortunately, the OnePlus 9 Pro is powered by the latest Snapdragon 888 chipset paired with Adreno 660 GPU. As it has been with other smartphones using this chip, the performance is nothing short of incredible with the phone loading apps at an amazing speed.

As usual, you’re getting either 8GB or 12GB of RAM depending on the variant you opt for. However, you should note that the amount of RAM you opt for will determine the storage you’re getting. The 8GB of RAM is paired with 128GB built-in storage, while you get 256GB when you buy the 12GB of RAM model. However, as with other flagship devices, there’s no SDcard support here, so you’d be restricted only to the storage option you bought.

Interestingly, the OnePlus 9 Pro is a 5G-ready smartphone, so be ready to take the advantage of next-gen internet connectivity if it isn’t available in your region yet.

The phone runs on the latest Android 11 OS out of the box, with OnePlus OxygenOS 11.3.3 overlay. As usual, you’d enjoy the amazing features of the Android’s latest OS, including an always-on display that makes it feel unique and great.

OnePlus 9 Pro: Battery Capacity

Unfortunately, the only place OnePlus failed to improve is on the battery side of the phone. However, the OnePlus 9 Pro’s 4500mAh battery life might be large to you depending on the type of user you’re, but you should note it won’t last for 48-hours if you’re using the phone regularly.

Meanwhile, there’s 65-watt fast charging support to act as a makeup for the mediocre battery life. Also, the device supports 50-watt wireless charging which is one of the highest we’ve ever seen on a flagship smartphone.

OnePlus 9 Pro: Price in Nigeria and Availability

The OnePlus 9 Pro was announced on March 23, 2021, in a virtual launching event from the company and it’s currently available for order. Fortunately, the phone is available in the US, UK, and all major phone outlets in Nigeria.

As we earlier mentioned, the OnePlus 9 Pro is offering at a very expensive price and if you want the 8GB of RAM with 128GB storage variant, you’ll be spending ₦395,000 (about $970). However, the bigger RAM and storage variants of 12GB/256GB will cost ₦436,000 (roughly $1,070). If those prices are expensive to you, you can comfortably switch to the original OnePlus 9 which was launched the same day with the Pro model at a price of ₦296,000 (about $730).
